Residents of Bailey, Colorado, are rallying to establish a local health service district to improve access to medical care in the area. The proposed Platte Canyon Health Service District aims to provide consistent, reliable healthcare services to Bailey and surrounding communities, including Shawnee, Grant, Pine Junction, and nearby areas.
The initiative, now in its third year, is driven by community volunteers who are advocating for the proposal to be placed on the ballot. A public hearing is scheduled for March 16th at noon in Fairplay, where the Park County Board of County Commissioners will consider the proposal.
If approved, the health service district would offer a permanent, full-time family clinic in the Bailey area. Services would include primary care, urgent care, mental health support, laboratory tests, and X-rays. The clinic plans to accept all insurance types, including Medicare and Medicaid, ensuring accessibility for all residents. Governance would be provided by an elected, unpaid five-member board, emphasizing community involvement and oversight.
The establishment of a local clinic is expected to bring several benefits to the community:
Reliable Care
A permanent clinic would allow residents to see the same healthcare providers regularly, improving continuity of care and health outcomes.
Shorter Travel Times
Currently, residents often travel to Conifer, Evergreen, or Denver for basic medical needs. A local clinic would reduce these travel times, making healthcare more accessible.
Expanded Services
The clinic would offer a range of services, including routine check-ups, urgent care, chronic disease management, immunizations, and lab work, all in one location.
Support for All Ages
From pediatrics to senior care, the family practice would serve everyone in the community, ensuring comprehensive care for all age groups.
The proposed health service district is designed to benefit various segments of the community, including families, seniors, students, teachers, local workers, businesses, visitors, and veterans. Additionally, it aims to ease the burden on emergency medical services by providing accessible, non-emergency care options.
Community members are encouraged to participate in the upcoming public hearing to voice their support or concerns regarding the proposal. For more information and to download the proposed plan, visit the Platte Canyon Health District’s website.
